Trailer for “The Happytime Murders” is unlike anything you’ve seen before

Back on Friday, a Red Band Trailer dropped for an incredibly unique looking movie. The film in question is The Happytime Murders, which has been long in development. Coming from Brian Henson (yes, the son of the legendary Jim Henson), it’s a comedy involving humans and puppets. It always sounded like if The Muppets were in a dirty version of Who Framed Roger Rabbit, and now we know. This Trailer is just the dirtiest thing, and hilarious as well. You’ll be able to see the Trailer below, and fair warning, it’s incredibly not safe for work, but first, we’ll dive into the flick a bit. It sure looks one of a kind.

This film is an action/crime comedy, mixing humans and puppets. IMDb has two plot descriptions, which are as follows: “When the puppet cast of an ’80s children’s TV show begins to get murdered one by one, a disgraced LAPD detective-turned-private eye puppet takes on the case.” / “A murder mystery set in a world where humans and puppets co-exist, but puppets are viewed as second-class citizens. When the puppet cast of an ’80s children’s TV show begins to get murdered one by one, a former cop, who has since become a private eye, takes on the case.” So, we have a human detective of some sort in Connie Edwards (Melissa McCarthy) teaming up with a puppet private investigator to solve a violent crime. If that sounds odd, you don’t know the half of it. That being said, it sounds like a riot. The aforementioned Henson directs a script co-written by Dee Austin Robertson and Todd Berger. Filling out the cast are the likes of Elizabeth Banks, Joel McHale, Maya Rudolph, Jimmy O. Yang, and more. This definitely won’t be for everyone, but if you share my sense of humor, this is one to very much anticipate.

Folks, this Trailer just tickled me pink. It could just be a silly little movie, but it’s right up my alley. Once upon a time this was going to star Kathrine Heigl, then it was Jamie Foxx, though now McCarthy is who helped get it before cameras. She’s at her best when allowed to get down and dirty, so it could really be a solid pairing of material and talent. Henson knows puppets and his sense of humor is decidedly dark, so this certainly won’t be pulling any punches. One look at the Trailer will show you that much, no question about it.

Personally, I’ve long been a Muppets fan, so even this dirty offshoot seems perfectly suited to my sensibilities. I’ve even seen a stage show that Henson did almost a decade ago called Stuffed and Unstrung. It was basically dirty puppet improv, and it was among the funniest things that I’ve seen in my life. If The Happytime Murders is even half as funny, this will be one of my favorite comedies of 2018. Fingers and toes crossed. So far, the early returns are promising, though I concede that this likely will be somewhat divisive. Hey, most of the best comedies tend to be that way anyhow.

You can see the Trailer for The Happytime Murders below, and again, this is NSFW in the truest sense of the term. The film hits on August 17th, so it won’t be coming out until the end of the summer. That means we’ll likely get a few more Trailers between now and then. In fact, we could get both Green Band and Red Band editions, helping to further showcase the tone at play here. Time will tell, but I know that I’m excited. In the meantime, enjoy the Trailer and brace yourself. These puppets really go there, to say the least. You’ve been warned…
